When Elaine Quijano, a Philippine-American broadcast journalist, moderated the 2016 U.S. vice presidential election debate, she became the first journalist of Asian descent, male or female, to moderate a national debate of any sort.
Judging from the outcome of the meeting between Democrat Tim Kaine and Republican Mike Pence, the winner was . . . Eliane Quijano.
Born in raised in the suburbs of Chicago, she began her career as an intern at WCIA-TV in Champaign, Illinois in the nineties, and later did reporting, producing and anchoring for that station before becoming a general assignment reporter for WFTS-TV in Tampa.
Ms. Quijano went on to CNN, where covered the Pentagon, the Supreme Court, and electoral politics, eventually becoming a White House reporter. Since 2010, though, she's been at CBS, where she's covered Hurricane Sandy, the Boston Marathon bombing, and the 2014 World Cup, among other stories.
Elaine Quijano is an anchor for CBSN, CBS's digital streaming network, and she anchors the Sunday edition of "The CBS Weekend News" as well as filing "Money Watch reports during the Sunday night broadcast of "60 Minutes."
And she's just getting started.
